Document-high temperatures depart 1000’s with out energy

Tuesday marked the peak of a recent heat wave in the Northeast, leaving nearly 14,000 customers without power.

The hottest day of the year saw thousands of customers across Massachusetts without power, according to statewide data.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency reported 13,556 customers without power at around 10 p.m. Tuesday night. Most of the reported outages were for residents in Norfolk, Suffolk, and Middlesex counties.

The most significant outages proportionately were in Westford and Tyngsborough, where more than 10 percent of residents lost power. Boston had the most reported outages, leaving about 4,760 customers without power.

Tuesday’s outages were caused by sweltering temperatures at the peak of a recent heat wave. Temperatures climbed into the triple digits with a heat index as high as 110°F.

The heat made for the hottest June day ever recorded in Boston and the fourth warmest day on record, according to The Boston Globe. Tuesday’s record temperatures also marked the hottest day in Boston since July 1977.
