The Celtics’ G League affiliate is reportedly hiring a former Celtics player as its new head coach.

According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Phil Pressey will be named the next Maine Celtics head coach.

Pressey, 34, played in Boston for the first two seasons of his NBA career between 2013-15. The guard went on to play one more season, splitting the 2015-16 campaign between the 76ers and Suns. Pressey also played for several professional basketball teams overseas from 2017-22.

A quasi-local kid, he played two seasons of high school basketball at Waltham High and Cushing Academy in Ashburnham as a freshman and sophomore, respectively.

With the Celtics, Pressey appeared in 150 games (11 starts) and averaged 3.1 points under head coach Brad Stevens. He played in two Eastern Conference first-round playoff games against the Cavaliers (Games 1 and 4).

Most recently, Pressey was the Celtics’ player enhancement coach. He was hired ahead of the team’s 18th championship-winning season in 2023.

Pressey spoke highly of Stevens on an episode of “View From The Rafters” in December. He said he gets his energy from the coach turned executive.

“He has an ability to give you confidence,” Pressey said of the now-Celtics president of basketball operations. “As a player, he gave me confidence, and now as a coach, he gives me confidence. It doesn’t matter if you’re the number one on the team or the number eighteenth. He sees that everybody has a part, everybody has a role. That’s something that I don’t take for granted. He talks about energy, and energy is contagious.

“That’s something that I try to bring every day. You know there’s going to be good days, there’s going to be bad days. But your attitude is something you can control.”

Pressey’s assistant coaching job in Boston wasn’t his first since retiring from playing in 2022. He was a graduate assistant for Missouri men’s basketball for 2022-23, his alma mater.

With Maine, Pressey is reportedly taking over for Tyler Lashbrook, who coached just one season for Maine in 2024-25.
