Radio host George Knight announced he’s been undergoing treatment for throat cancer since May.
Longtime Boston radio host George Knight recently announced he is undergoing treatment for throat cancer.
Knight, who hosts Mornings with George Knight on WERS, shared news of his diagnosis and treatment in an announcement on the WERS website on June 12.
“Since early May I have been undergoing treatment for throat cancer,” Knight wrote to his listeners. “It was discovered after I noticed swollen glands that were behaving strangely, and was encouraged strongly by those around me to get them checked out. It was not immediately apparent what was going on, but after tests and more tests, it was determined that it was something serious but treatable.”
Knight opened up about the emotional rollercoaster that followed his diagnosis, sharing that he had lost his father as well as a co-worker to cancer. Knight told fans that while he initially hesitated to share his diagnosis with the public, he decided to open up about his journey to support listeners who may be fighting a similar battle.
“And maybe by relaying my experience, it will help reinforce that if you are dealing with cancer, you are so not alone,” wrote Knight. “I also thought it could be encouragement for others to not hesitate if there’s something that needs to be checked out. The very real possibility that a cancer can be effectively treated — even cured — increases drastically when it’s found early.”
Since May, Knight has completed “a long stretch of radiation and chemotherapy.” He said he’s done his best to “put on a happy face” despite the effect his condition has had on his voice. Knight did not announce any plans to take time away from his radio show.
WERS describes Knight’s show as “a morning show for TRUE music lovers that plays more music than any other show in Boston, along with musical knowledge and companionship, plus quick news, weather, and traffic updates.”
