High domestic opening numbers don’t always mean fan favorites — here’s how Boston movies stack up.

Boston.com is hosting the ultimate Boston movie bracket, pitting iconic Massachusetts films against each other — but which one actually made the most at the box office?

Out of 32 movies in the bracket, the one with the highest domestic gross earnings is a legendary Massachusetts-based thriller: “Jaws.” Since its release 50 years ago, Steven Spielberg’s summer blockbuster raked in more than $267 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

However, this classic didn’t even crack the top five for the highest domestic earnings for opening weekend. After adjusting for inflation, that title belongs to another ocean-related thriller: “The Perfect Storm” starring George Clooney, which earned more than $41 million at its release in 2000 — equal to $76.8 million today.

Dorchester native Mark Wahlberg starred in the box office hit movie “Ted’’ which stunned Hollywood by taking in $54.1 million in its opening weekend. The film debuted in June 2012 at number one and broke “The Hangover’’ box office record for the biggest R-rated opening in the nation. – REUTERS

Though it seems that Bostonians love their local thrillers, two of the top five are comedies. “Ted” took the number two spot in both domestic weekend and gross earnings, with $54 million, while “The Heat” placed fourth at $39 million. Respectively, these movies’ opening earnings equate to $76 million and $53 million today. (“The Perfect Storm, “Ted,” and “The Heat” all lost in the first round of the bracket.)

A stellar year for new Boston movies was 2010. “Shutter Island,” “The Town,” and “The Social Network” together generated more than $87 million at their releases, or $128 million today. (Plus, “The Fighter” came out in 2010, too, but it paled in comparison at the box office.)

The two newest Boston movies in our bracket lineup, “The Holdovers” and “American Fiction,” had some of the lowest box office numbers. This could have been due to lower rates of moviegoers in recent years as a result of COVID-19, or an overshadowing of blockbusters like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” that dominated theaters and critics’ attention. Once both movies won Oscars in 2024, both “The Holdovers” and “American Fiction” grew popular that year on streaming platforms.
