New Movies Streaming
“28 Days Later” (2002)
Danny Boyle is bringing us back to his post-apocalyptic wasteland with “28 Years Later” on June 20. Before heading to your local cineplex, revisit Boyle’s haunting 2002 film, starring Cillian Murphy as a man who awakes from a coma in the immediate aftermath of a world destroyed by a virus that turns humans into rage-filled zombies.
How to watch: “28 Days Later” is streaming on Pluto TV.
“Emma.” (2020)
Watching the new Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal romantic drama “Materialists” earlier this week, the story I most often thought of was Jane Austen’s “Emma,” which has been skillfully adapted for the screen several times.
Instead of recommending “Clueless” or Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1996 “Emma,” which are both great, I’ll suggest this under-seen pandemic-era adaptation starring Anya Taylor-Joy, who is superb as the scheming matchmaker who doesn’t consider her own feelings. Come for Taylor-Joy and veteran Bill Nighy as her father Mr. Woodhouse, stay for early-career turns from Josh O’Connor (“Challengers”) and Mia Goth (“Pearl”).
How to watch: “Emma.” is streaming on Peacock.
“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (2010)
It was refreshing to see Chris Evans shake off the post-Marvel malaise in Celine Song’s “Materialists” (full review here). Before that, the Sudbury native was on a legendary cold streak — his only good role since 2020 was a small voiceover in “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.”
Because I’ve recommended the Netflix animated show before, let’s go back in time to 2010, when Evans was part of an incredible ensemble in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” The rare graphic novel adaptation that actually looks and feels like a live-action comic strip on screen, “Scott Pilgrim” director Edgar Wright fills the screen with BANG!s, BAM!s, and KAPOW!s as Scott (Michael Cera) fights each of the seven evil exes of his new beau, Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).
With a killer soundtrack of original songs written for the film and a young cast that exploded into stardom soon after (Brie Larson, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Kieran Culkin, and more), “Scott Pilgrim” is the ultimate cool-kid movie.
How to watch: “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is streaming on HBO Max.
New TV Shows Streaming
“Stick”
Owen Wilson is a lot of fun as a disgraced professional golfer whose career has been derailed by a very public meltdown on the course. Years after leaving the game, “Stick” is at a low point, toiling away as a club pro while his wife (Judy Greer) initiatives divorce proceedings.
Things turn around when he finds a young phenom (Peter Dager) at the course, vowing to train him until he’s PGA-ready. With roles for Marc Maron and Timothy Olyphant in the ensemble as well, “Stick” is another feel-good sports series from the streaming service that brought us “Ted Lasso.”
How to watch: “Stick” is streaming on Apple TV+.
“Underdogs”
I’m a sucker for nature documentaries, and even though I’d prefer this new National Geographic series be narrated by David Attenborough than Ryan Reynolds, it’s still an enjoyable watch.
The wisecracking “Deadpool” star highlights nature’s weirdoes, including bizarre courtship rituals, surprising tricks, and disgusting behaviors (by our standards, anyway).
How to watch: “Underdogs” begins streaming Sunday on Disney+ and Hulu.
